What does it mean when it says sales/referral experience?

Todays Question and answer is: I am filling out an application for a bank teller and it says "Minimum of 6 months sales /referral experience that includes providing related products and service options to customers preferred" What does that mean? And what would qualify for that? I have only worked at a grocery store and I have been there for 3 1/2 years.

Did you work in any kind of sales, or network marketing, where you had to gain referrals, or talk to referrals given to you? Network marketing is often referred to as relationship marketing. In these types of jobs, you need to be good at forming relationships. They want you to be drumming up business for the bank–all the time, in an hourly position where you most probably will not be rewarded accordingly (unless they are grooming tellers for personal banker jobs).
Think of something in the past you have done that is similar to this. Did you have to sign up people for a rewards club at a retail store? Or are you the one who always gets friends to read the latest best-seller, or see the newest movie?
